The Click Effect\u00a0<\/em>is a live-action,\u00a0immersive\u00a0VR experience following two renegade marine science researchers as\u00a0they attempt to freedive a hundred feet below the ocean\u2019s surface in a single breath\u00a0to capture the \u201cclick\u201d communication of dolphins and sperm whales \u2013 the world\u2019s largest predators. It is one of the first VR films to be shot\u00a0almost entirely underwater and\u00a0includes never-before-seen 360 footage of face-to-face encounters with bottlenose dolphins, pilot whales, humpback whales, and giant sperm whales.\u00a0 The film was\u00a0created by Sandy Smolan and James Nestor and\u00a0shot in The Cayman Islands,\u00a0Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, and Hyeres in the Mediterranean Sea and was based on Nestor\u2019s book,\u00a0DEEP<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Presented by Annapurna Pictures and Vrse.works, The Click Effect is the first VR film published as part of The New York Times Op-Docs series\u00a0and the first project in a series of immersive journalism experiments commissioned by the Sundance Institute, with the generous support of the\u00a0MacArthur Foundation.<\/p>\n

The Click Effect is also available on the Vrse app and NYTVR.
