International Women\u2019s Day 2017 (IWD) is upon us #BeBoldForChange. How brilliant it is to see the media online and otherwise engaging so fully with the day and all that it represents. The buzz and excitement for\u00a0IWD\u00a0is palpable with so many wonderful projects taking place to mark the day. One I am looking forward to in particular is “Speak Out\u201d by\u00a0composer\u00a0Kate Whitely<\/a>; a\u00a0choral composition, setting to music quotes taken from\u00a0Malala Yousafzai\u2019s<\/a>\u00a02013 UN Speech, in\u00a0which she spoke powerfully about every girl\u2019s right to an education. The piece will be\u00a0broadcast on\u00a0BBC Radio 3<\/a>\u00a0as part of programming for\u00a0IWD.\u00a0\u00a0A truly inspired idea, bringing an artistic tangibility to the theme of IWD and from a young women who\u00a0embodies the 2017 theme\u00a0#BeBoldForChange.<\/p>\n

To help distill the buzz and excitement around IWD 2017, here are 10 facts for IWD reflecting, at a glance, the state of women\u2019s rights around the world\u00a0courtesy of\u00a0Valbona Zeneli\u2019s\u00a0fantastic 2014 piece\u00a0Women\u2019s Rights Are Human Rights<\/a><\/p>\n

  1. Women perform 66% of the world\u2019s work and produce 50% of the food. They earn just 10% of incomes and own 1% of the property globally.<\/li>\n
  2. And out of 197 countries, only 22 of them have women currently serving as heads of state \u2014 just 11.2%.<\/li>\n
  3. Women outpace men in educational achievement, with 58% of\u00a0college \u00a0graduates. While two-thirds of women graduate in the humanities and the arts, men continue to dominate in science with 60% of graduates.<\/li>\n
  4. More girls than boys now complete their secondary education in 32 out of 34 OECD countries, accounting for around 60% of the total.<\/li>\n
  5. In business, the gender gap remains wide. In the United States, for example, only 21 of the CEOs of Fortune 500 companies are women.<\/li>\n
  6. Men are promoted based on their potential, while women are promoted based on past accomplishments.<\/li>\n
  7. Research studies confirm a direct correlation between the gender gap in economic opportunities and economic growth.<\/li>\n
  8. By contrast, the smaller the nation\u2019s gender gap, the higher its economic productivity.<\/li>\n
  9. In nearly every country, women work longer hours than men and are paid less.<\/li>\n
